Tips for the office (back)

Responsible use of paper

Less paper = less trees cut down

For more than 10 years, the consumption of paper and cardboard in the world has increased by about 3% each year. In Canada, we use over 225 kg of paper annually per capita. Out of this amount, almost 50% is for writing and graphics as found in offices¹.

Here are seven steps to take to reduce your paper use and thus the number of trees cut down each year:

  • Use each side of the sheet for photocopying and printing. Make sure that "front/back" is the default setting for all your computers.
  • Reuse paper until both sides are completely covered.
  • Reduce the number of copies printed for a single document. Consider electronic versions of your communications and promotional tools and other documents.
  • Purchase paper that is recycled, chlorine bleach free, and FSC certified.
  • Always recycle office paper once it can no longer be used.
  • Read daily papers online.
  • Use a reusable coffee filter instead of disposable paper filters.
