Find high-quality images without breaking the bank
May 11 2021 / 3 min

We’ve all heard that a picture is worth a thousand words—but did you know it’s scientifically accurate? The human brain processes images 60,000 times faster than words. Whether bold or subtle, visuals add tremendous value to your communications and can make or break the success of a campaign or web content.
To create real impact, though, you need the right image. It must support your message, grab attention, align with your brand, and above all, be of high quality. And by “quality,” we mean not only resolution, but also aesthetics!
Does that mean you’ll always have to spend big on visuals? Sometimes, yes, especially to ensure originality in your campaigns. But in many cases, stock photos can do the trick—if you know where to look.
Where can you find free, high-quality, royalty-free images?
As you might guess, just because an image is online doesn’t mean it’s free to use. If you’re thinking, “no one will notice,” think again. Artists and photographers can easily track where their work is used with a simple reverse image search on Google. That’s why it’s so important to understand the legal implications for your business before using an image on your website, in campaigns, or on social media.
Next, find websites that offer royalty-free images and check that commercial use is allowed. Always read the licensing terms, such as those on Unsplash. Some platforms ask you to subscribe to their newsletter to access free images, which is often worth it!
Whether free or paid, your images must always align with your positioning and brand identity.

How do you find the perfect image?
Now that you’ve got the right tools, here’s how to use them wisely.
Never compromise on quality
Pixelated, blurry, or low-resolution images will hurt your brand’s reputation. Luckily, most free image banks offer high-quality visuals, but you still need to double-check. Make sure the main subject is in focus and the photo is sharp.
For print, your image should be at least 300 dpi. For web, 72 dpi is the standard (though higher resolutions can be beneficial). When in doubt, ask an expert and always run a test before printing or publishing.
And remember: image dimensions (in pixels) matter too and vary by platform. Be sure you know the specs!
Message first, always
You love an image, but if it doesn’t connect to your message, it’s a no-go. Even without text, a good image should make your idea instantly clear.
Before selecting a visual, ask yourself:
- Does this image visually express my message?
- Does it match my company’s brand guidelines?
- Does it immediately catch the eye?
Play on emotions
If you read our content regularly, you know how much we value storytelling—even in B2B! The visuals you choose should reinforce the story you’re telling. Do the colours, composition, and style evoke the right feeling? Do the people shown seem to fit the part—age, appearance, and expression? Do they reflect your audience? Look closely and try to see the image through your customer’s eyes.
Since free stock photos are widely available, you may encounter them being used elsewhere, including by your competitors. Paid options, such as iStock, Shutterstock, or Getty Images, help you stand out more. But for truly exclusive visuals, working with a photographer or illustrator is your best bet.
